Pet Allergy Treatment From Our Bloomington Veterinarianpet allergy treatment

At Fairway Knolls Veterinary Hospital, our Bloomington veterinarian is able to diagnose, treat, and help manage any number of medical conditions in pets. What many pet owners do not realize, however, is that pets can develop allergies just like humans can. These allergies can be seasonal, year-round, or even environmental. Fortunately, our skilled veterinary team has the resources to diagnose and treat allergies to improve your pet's overall quality of life.

Signs of Allergies in Pets

The specific symptoms related to pet allergies can vary greatly depending on the pet and the specific cause of the allergy itself. For example, pets who are experiencing an environmental allergy, such as a food allergy, may only show signs of an allergic reaction in parts of the body that have come in contact with the allergen. In pets with food allergies, this may result in constant itching and scratching of the skin around the face and mouth.

Often times we will treat secondary infections that start as allergies. A common misconception is believing any itching your pet is experiencing is from allergies but actually 95 percent of the cases we see have secondary infections (yeast/bacteria) are causing most of the itching.

In some cases, allergies can even cause a pet to become ill, which will result in vomiting, diarrhea, a loss of appetite, and/or general lethargy.

If your pet is displaying any signs of an allergic reaction, you recommend that you schedule an appointment with our veterinarian as soon as possible. And if your pet is experiencing any serious symptoms (such as difficulty breathing), please don't hesitate to bring your pet into an emergency vet.

Treatment Options Available

In our office, we provide comprehensive pet allergy testing to assist in narrowing down the specific cause of your pet's symptoms. However, we may also recommend other forms of testing, such as thyroid testing to check the health of the immune system and rule out other potential problems. If your pet is determined to have an allergy, there are two potential approaches to treatment that we tend to use in our office.

If the allergen is determined to be environmental, then we will likely recommend immunotherapy as a means of reducing your pet's symptoms and allowing your pet to lead a happier life. Many pet owners suspect food as the source of an allergy but in about 15 percent of pets the food is the actual source of allergy. However, in the case, we will find that allergies are caused by food, so we may recommend a switch to a different formula. In some instances, a specialty diet may need to be implemented in order to avoid allergens commonly found in pet foods.

We offer Cyto-point as a new injectable immune modulator which helps to reduce itchy and dermatitis symptoms in pets.

For pets with allergies that have led to an infection, such as a skin or ear infection, we can assist in the treatment of this as well. Another option for treatment of itchy symptoms in pets we may recommend is Apoquel.
